The method used is of lesser importance for the terminology. The name is derived from the fact that, at a certain angle, such parts appear black. The difference is that black polishing usually refers to smaller parts, such as screw heads. Mirror polishing and black polishing are essentially the same things as Zaratsu/Sallaz. Zaratsu is, in this sense, a dedication to a higher standard rather than a unique technology. The end goal is a perfect mirror-like surface. But for truly impressive results, you need to combine the technique with a greater number of passes with increasingly fine polishing compounds, cleaning the case between every step. As you have read above, that is actually not entirely uncommon. If the polishing wheel were a car tire, you would not hold the case against the running surface, but against the sidewall (as pictured on the image of the lapping machine). The main technical difference with traditional polishing is the use of the flat face of the polishing disk, rather than the round side. Sallaz polishing machines by Seiko in the 1950s. Its origin is the acquisition of German Gebr. Zaratsu (ザラツ) is a Japanese transliteration of Sallaz. You may have heard some of these terms to refer to specifically excellent levels of case finishing.

Of course, combinations of robotized and manual finishing can be utilized as well.Ī word on Zaratsu, Sallaz, mirror, and black polishing The perfect repeatability has to be weighed against the lack of an artisan’s sharp eye. Many modern watch manufacturers use a robotized version of a similar setup. It can also allow for movement across a single axis for a very precise, curved surface. This will keep the case at a precise angle across multiple axes. The operator can manually hold the case up against the wheel. The type of finish accomplished is determined by the surface of the wheel. A motor powers an upright disk that is perfectly flat. I will fix mine with a local machinist.A traditional polishing wheel - Image courtesy of Ī lot of case surface finishing is done on a lapping wheel. I did this and to get a replacement is about $75.00. Mine is B-4 08137 and the plate is right on the the top of the table.ĭo not strip the threads on the knob that elevates the cutter.

NEW HERMES BEVELER SERIAL

Should be a legend plate with serial number.

I have a cutter grinder but that bit is incredibly sharp still. I cannot think of how many thousands of desk signs and badges I have beveled and the carbide cutter is like the Energizer rabbit. You will be using an unused portion of the cutter then. In an emergency you can move the spindle away from you a bit and then lower it. One additional, I cannot see from the picture, but on my model there is also an adjustment for near and far for the cutting assembly. If you call Gravograph (New Hermes) and provide the model number, you should be able to get documentation for that model. I'd be happy to sharpen them for you, or you could send them off to any number of engraving supply houses. If there's enough carbide remaining, they can be resharpened at a fraction of the cost of new. You don't necessarily need to buy new cutters. The shank size for that model is (typically) 1/8". Also, I probably need to replace the spring that the motor mount uses for tension and the belt and was hoping there were part #s for them in the manual.Īlso, the cutters are dull so I figured that the manual might have a shank size so I can order new ones. Keep in mind that while I am "somewhat" mechanical, "somewhat" is the operative word here. I just got this thing and plan to strip it down and clean it and make it all shiny.I was hoping the manual had a parts breakout (aka explosion view) so I didn't end up w/ extra parts at the end.

Keep the "shank" portion of the angled cutter above the substrate and the pointed tip of the cutter slightly away from the edge of the substrate.įrom there, you either raise or lower the cutter, with the vertical adjustment, to achieve your desired width of the bevel. The only thing I know is that the b-3 came b4 the B-4.īasically, you have a horizontal and vertical adjustment for the cutter. The big question.does anyone have a manual for this they could copy or scan for me? Anyone know how the B-3 differed from the B-4 and B-5. So I finally got a New Hermes Beveler off of e-Bay.
